When it was time to transition my oldest son out of the nursery, I knew I wanted to create a space that he would be excited about. Transitions can be hard for little ones! And there were a lot of transitions happening at once for him – new room (on a new floor of our home), new bed, and a new baby brother on the way!

Get Kids Involved in the Planning Process
Since I wanted him to be excited about it, I actually got him involved in the planning process. I found a few ideas I liked and let him pick which one we went with. The monster truck sheets were our starting point and everything else flowed off of those. But as we know, kids can change their minds (and their interests) quickly, so I tried to keep the main pieces neutral. Instead of a themed comforter, we went with a neutral comforter and monster truck sheets (which are more affordable to switch out when he’s ready for a change). Art is another easy way to add to a theme, while also being easy to change when the time comes – thus, the monster jam prints. Here’s the plan we came up with!

Toddler Boy Room Sources
- Monster Jam Prints – These are digital downloads that you can print locally in whatever size you need.
- Cube Storage Organizer – Cube storage furniture is great for kids’ rooms – fabric bins hide toys while also keeping them easily accessible. This option is super affordable and the “natural” color looks so close to real wood!
- Simple Twin Bed – We are skipping the toddler bed and going straight to a twin bed that will last him much longer.
- Monster Truck Sheets – I think the ones I bought have been discontinued, but these and these are cute too!
- Simple Comforter – My toddler usually ops for a blanket to sleep with at night, but I still wanted a comforter for the bed. This one is super affordable, light-weight, and surprisingly warm!
- Wall Mounted Lamp – There are lots of plug in options out there, so no electrical work is needed to install!
- Rug – I want to keep this room makeover budget-friendly, so I’m using a rug we already have. It’s actually perfect for this room!
- Shelves for Books – These shelves are a great way to display books in a kids room.
- Nugget Play Couch – This is definitely more on the higher end of the budget, but instead of buying a chair to sit in, I’m going to get one of these. I think it will get a ton of use!
- Linen Blackout Curtains – I used these curtains in our rental cottage bedroom and was super impressed by the quality (and the price)! I think they will look really nice in here (and blackout is a must in a kids room).
- Light Wood Dresser – I’m actually hoping to find a dresser to refinish to save money, but I do love the natural wood color of this one. It’s unfinished, but you could seal it if you wanted to leave the light wood color.
- Similar Train Table – My parents still have my younger brother’s train table from when he was little. They are graciously allowing us to use for a little while, which my son is really excited about!
The paint color we chose is Sherwin Williams Manitou Blue. Be sure to check back to see how it all comes together!
